Embark Dog DNA Test—Everything You Need to Know
There are a lot of things to love about the Embark DNA test for your dog. Let’s look at some of the most interesting and important information
What the Test Include
So, what do you get for your money when you purchase the dog DNA test from Embark? Like many other testing companies, Embark offers different tests based on your needs and your budget. There are two main tests with Embark. These are
Breed Identification
The Breed Identification test is the less expensive test offered by Embark. While not as comprehensive as the more expensive option, it still includes the main testing that most customers are looking for—testing for breed identification. Embark says it offers the most accurate breed identification on the market
The Breed Identification test includes:
- Breed identification testing, including comparison to the DNA of over 250 different breeds
- Ancestry identification, which attempts to map your dog’s family tree all the way back to great-grandparents
- DNA relative finder, which helps you learn about your dog’s relatives and even helps you get in contact with those relative
Comprehensive Health + Breed
For a little more money, you can get Embark’s full testing option. The Comprehensive Health + Breed test includes everything that the Breed Identification test does while adding a few major features that you may find beneficial. These include

- Testing that uses approximately 100 more genetic information as other dog DNA tests
- Relative finder, which helps you find your dog’s relatives. Embark is currently the only one offering this service
- Embark was developed by Dr. Adam Boyko, who is one of the world’s leading dog geneticists and a professor at Cornell University

- Updated results when they are available
- Use of the highest-rated dog DNA test on the market
- Option to ask questions of canine geneticists and highly specialized veterinarians—which are part of the Embark staff team

In comparison, many dog DNA tests offer limited benefits, Some of the drawbacks of these less-desirable tests, as highlighted by Embark, include:
- Breed identification may be or incomplete due to the limited database available to the testing company
- The test may only look for a few health if any at all
- Many tests do not look for dog traits in their testing, so you get only generic information about your dog’s breed(s)
- Some tests may use only 1% as much genetic information as the Embark team use
How the Embark Dog DNA Test Work
There are four basic steps that you can take to get your dog’s DNA test from Embark. These include:
- Create an Embark account. The first step to getting your dog’s DNA tested by Embark is to create an account on their site. The account creation is important because it establishes your dog and you with Embark—so they know who your dog’s info belongs to. That way, when your dog’s results are posted to the Embark site, you can easily access them.
- Choose your testing option. The choices at Embark are simple. You can either go with the basic Breed Identification test, which includes all the information you are looking for when seeking to find out what breed or breeds your dog is. Or, you can choose the Comprehensive Health + Breed test, which goes even further to identify your dog’s potential health issues and natural traits of his or her breed(s).
- Take a swab of your dog’s saliva. Dog DNA tests are so easy nowadays—at least your part as the owner. While there is a lot of complicated science going on behind the scenes at Embark, you simply have to take a cheeks swab and mail it into Embark.
- Answer survey questions. This last step is totally optional, but it does a lot to help the Embark team learn more about how different breeds and breed combinations act in real life. You can take a survey about your dog’s behavior so that the information can be added to the database kept by Embark.
