Keeping our pets happy and healthy is at the forefront of many of our daily routines. We want what is best for our furry friends whether it is the latest toy, specialty or homemade foods and treats, or the most highly regarded Veterinarian in our neighborhood, we will spare no expense. We take them to the shopping center, on family vacations, and to special parks designed just for them. We have really shifted from seeing our pets as possessions to seeing our pets as family members. One of the latest adventures in loving little fido is doggy DNA testing. To help us know our pets deeper and care for them better, dog DNA tests can provide important information that helps us care for our pets in many different aspects of their lives. Embark Vet DNA testing is on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to this new type of testing. In partnership with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Embark uses a research-grade DNA genotyping platform to produce the most accurate results. With a simple swab of your dog’s cheek, there are five main areas that they can help you discover; Breed, Ancestry, Relatives, Health and Traits.

BREED

Embark Vet provides the most accurate breed information on the market. With data on 250 breed types, you can be sure you’re getting accurate results. It is important to know that breed mix of your dog for a long list of reasons, one of the more important is knowing what to look for as your dog ages. It is easier to know what health concerns to test for, if you know the breed of your dog and what the disposition to different conditions might be. This can help you and your vet be much more specific in knowing how to care for your special friend.

ANCESTRY

Embark Vet DNA testing includes your dog’s family tree back to great grandparents. An important factor for breeders, Embark is the first commercial dog DNA test that looks for inbreeding tracts over the entire genome and can detect inbreeding from dozens and dozens of generations back. Providing important data regarding the relatedness of dogs can help breeders determine the COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) of a potential litter which can help them decide whether or not to breed.

RELATIVES

The same way we can use DNA data to find our long lost relatives, we can help our dog friends find theirs! Imagine all of the doggy play dates and tired pups we could have if we took our little buddies to play with their litter-mates! Embark Vet DNA provides the world’s only canine relative finder. Discover the story behind your dog.

HEALTH

Embark Vet DNA testing offers screening for over 170 genetic conditions. Working toward being able to be proactive in the health of your dog, Embark provides vet-actionable health information such as your dog’s normal ALT values ( Alanine Aminotransferase) can help your vet better understand blood-work results in relation to your dog’s liver health.

Get ahead of canine diseases with the health report provided by your Embark Vet results. Embark can provide actionable data to your vet that will help them get ahead of health concerns to come. Testing for over 170 health conditions, Embark can predict your dog’s predisposition to several issues including glaucoma, degenerative myelopathy, and dilated cardiomyopathy, three of the most common adult-onset diseases in dogs.

TRAITS

Embark Vet DNA will help you learn why your dog is unique, from the tip of the nose to the shape of the toes. What breed mix is my dog that makes her so full of energy? Why does my dog have floppy ears? Where does my dog’s color pattern come from? All of these questions can be answered with a doggy DNA test!

How it all works

Erin, Embark’s Senior Veterinary Geneticist, was asked some questions regarding Embark’s Microarray Based Dog DNA testing, here’s what she had to say:

What is the molecular method?

Single Mutation Test: Amplifies and evaluates DNA sequence at a single genomic region Microarray Genotyping: Uses probes to sample regions across the entire genome (density, aka, probes per stretch of sequence varies by service)

What kind of results do you expect?

Single Mutation Test: Your dog’s genotype at a single mutation Microarray Genotyping: Your dog’s genotypes at 200K+ mutations, which also provides breed, ancestry, sex, relatedness, as well as full panel health and traits

Keeping other dogs happy and healthy

Something we love about Embark is the way they give back. They truly put their money where their mouth is in the fall of 2018 when they donated 100% of their profits to help support Hurricane Harvey Dogs. For 5 days after the horrible disaster that was Hurricane Harvey, Embark’s founder and CEO Ryan Boyko donated what amassed to over $10,000 to area shelters and other organizations who were helping to rescue and care for dogs that were affected by the disaster. Way to go Embark!
