About Embark Vet’s Dog DNA Testing
Overview
It is no secret that science continues to advance from year to year. For humans, this has meant a vast array of medical discoveries, among many other important developments. One of the advances that many of us have begun to take advantage of is DNA testing to find long lost relatives, or to trace our family history back many generations to help tell our story. DNA testing can also help us discover health markers that can warn us of the possibilities of medical concerns to come. Doctors are able to be much more proactive when it comes to our well-being. In the recent past, DNA testing has also become available for our pets! For many of the same reasons we would want to test our own DNA, it has become important to test our pet’s DNA. Embark Vet, the world’s leader in pet DNA testing, looks at over 100 times as much genetic information as the competition.
Using their unique technology, Embark Vet is able to identify over 250 dog breeds and trace the maternal and paternal lines of your dog. Using this information, they can see what combinations your mixed breed dog is all the way back to the great grandparents. They can also provide invaluable information for your pure-breed dog. See below.
Embark combines the DNA from the swab you provide with online survey questions you answer about your dog with millions of other data points to help fuel future scientific discoveries.

How Embark Vet DNA testing can help you
Embark Vet can help you with a long list of important tasks where your furry friend is concerned. Imagine doggy play dates with siblings and cousins you may have never even knew existed. Embark is the only dog DNA test with Relative Finder. Find other Embark customers who have dogs related to yours. Connect with them far and near to discover behaviors and traits that they may have in common with their relatives.
They also test for over 170 health concerns. Get ahead of diseases such as glaucoma, degenerative myelopathy, and dilated cardiomyopathy, which are three of the most common adult-onset diseases in dogs. With this information, your vet can actively prevent some of these conditions, and at the very least can be watching for symptoms to provide early treatment to help keep your dog as healthy as possible for as long as possible.
For Breeders they offer several very important results. Each Embark for Breeders report includes results for coat loci including coat color, length, texture, shedding, and more. You’ll also learn about other body features like body size, face shape, and dewclaw propensity. They can provide results for nearly all genetic mutation tests recommended by national breed clubs. And they offer test results that are accepted by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for all conditions where the OFA has an established DNA registry.
Genetic Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI), is also important if you would like to enter the world of breeding, is an invaluable piece of genetic information to inform your breeding program and ensure the longevity of health in your breed. By taking a genome-wide, SNP-based approach, Embark’s measure of genetic COI is far more accurate than pedigree-based COI calculations, which do not take into account genetic recombination, the relatedness of distant ancestors or limited marker panel approaches.
“Embark provides critical information for dog owners, with comprehensive and accurate testing that is unique in canine genetics,” said Ryan Boyko, Embark’s CEO and co-founder. “Learning about a dog’s breed mix and ancestry enables our customers to make better decisions for their pet when it comes to training, behavior patterns, and more.”
How it works
There are four basic steps that you can take to get your dog’s DNA test from Embark:
- Create an Embark account. The first step to getting your dog’s DNA tested by Embark is to create an account on their site. The account creation is important because it establishes your dog and you with Embark—so they know who your dog’s info belongs to. That way, when your dog’s results are posted to the Embark site, you can easily access them.
- Choose your testing option. The choices at Embark are simple. You can either go with the basic Breed Identification test, which includes all the information you are looking for when seeking to find out what breed or breeds your dog is. Or, you can choose the Comprehensive Health + Breed test, which goes even further to identify your dog’s potential health issues and natural traits of his or her breed(s).
- Take a swab of your dog’s saliva. Dog DNA tests are so easy nowadays—at least your part as the owner. While there is a lot of complicated science going on behind the scenes at Embark, you simply have to take a cheeks swab and mail it into Embark.
- Answer survey questions. This last step is totally optional, but it does a lot to help the Embark team learn more about how different breeds and breed combinations act in real life. You can take a survey about your dog’s behavior so that the information can be added to the database kept by Embark.
